Myofascial Pain Syndrome

Myofascial pain syndromes can be acute or chronic. It refers to pain and inflammation in the body’s soft tissues. Nearly everyone periodically experiences muscle discomfort that generally resolves with rest over time, but people with myofascial pain syndrome have muscle pain that persists or worsens. In the Unites States, 10-20% of the general population suffers from chronic musculoskeletal pain. Myofascial pain syndrome has tender nodules in taut muscular bands called trigger points, which must be present for the diagnosis of myofascial pain syndrome. Causes are overuse and injury to the affected areas.
