Spasticity is a disorder of the body’s motor system in which certain muscles have exaggerated tone and abnormal tendon reflexes. Spasticity can interfere with gait, breathing, and speech. Spasticity is the result of upper motor neuron injury in the brain or spinal cord. Spasticity causes pain through severe, uncontrollable muscle spasms. Spasticity does not always lead to pain, but cramping and limb restless are common complaints with resultant inconvenience to the patient’s life. Causes are associated with spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, anoxic brain damage, brain trauma, severe head injury, and some other genetic diseases.
